CLEVELAND, Ohio — Lubrizol, a global leader in advanced specialty ingredients, is proud to announce a significant milestone in its sustainability journey: the elimination of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), from its peptide synthesis process. Beginning June 2025, Lubrizol will introduce three commercially available peptides synthesized without PFAS. This move reflects Lubrizol’s commitment to green chemistry and environmental stewardship, building on a foundation of naturally-derived peptides launched since 2020.
While the use of PFAS in cosmetic ingredients is limited and not typically present in final formulations, Lubrizol is taking proactive steps to eliminate these substances from peptide synthesis processes due to global environmental concerns and tightening regulations.
The three new PFAS-free peptides - Uplevity™ peptide, Uplevity™ e-Lift peptide, and Leuphasyl® peptide – represent Lubrizol’s next generation approach to peptide design. These ingredients are produced via Solid Phase Peptide Synthesis (SPPS), a Nobel Prize-winning method that typically requires reagents such as TFA, a PFAS. While TFA is not added to final cosmetic products and is currently out of scope in some U.S. regulations, evolving restrictions in both the U.S. and EU reinforce the importance of Lubrizol’s forward-thinking approach.
